IATA Compliance FAQ
Is IATA DGR different from ADR?
Yes, significantly. IATA DGR for air transport is much more restrictive than ADR for road. Many substances permitted by road are forbidden by air. Packaging requirements, quantity limits and documentation standards are all more stringent. You cannot assume ADR compliance means IATA compliance.
What is a Shipper's Declaration?
The Shipper's Declaration for Dangerous Goods is the mandatory document accompanying all dangerous goods shipments by air. It must contain precise information on UN number, proper shipping name, class, packing group, quantity, packaging type, handling instructions and emergency contact. Any error can result in rejection.
Can all dangerous goods go by air?
No. Many are forbidden entirely. Others are restricted to cargo aircraft only (not passenger flights). Quantity limits per package and per aircraft are significantly lower than road or sea. RADCaT assesses whether your specific substance can be shipped by air and under what conditions.
How often does IATA DGR change?
Annually. A new edition is published each January incorporating amendments from ICAO, UN recommendations and airline requirements. Your procedures and training must be updated to the current edition.
Do you provide shipper certification training?
Yes. We deliver IATA DGR training for shippers and packers covering classification, documentation, packaging, marking, labelling and acceptance procedures. Essential for any staff preparing dangerous goods for air transport.
What happens if undeclared DG is found on an aircraft?
It is a serious criminal offence. Airlines, airports and the CAA treat undeclared dangerous goods as a major safety incident. Penalties include prosecution, unlimited fines and imprisonment. Prevention through proper training and compliance is essential.
