IMDG Compliance FAQ
Who needs IMDG compliance?
Any business shipping dangerous goods by sea from UK ports — manufacturers, chemical companies, freight forwarders, shipping agents, logistics providers and anyone consigning DG cargo for maritime transport. The consignor has primary responsibility for correct classification, packaging and documentation.
What is a Container Packing Certificate?
A document confirming that the container has been packed in accordance with IMDG requirements — correct segregation, securing, marking, labelling and weight distribution. Required for every container carrying dangerous goods by sea.
How often does the IMDG Code change?
The IMDG Code is amended biennially (every 2 years). Each amendment can introduce new UN numbers, revised packaging requirements, changed segregation rules and updated documentation formats. RADCaT monitors all amendments and updates your procedures accordingly.
Can you help with multimodal shipments?
Yes. Many dangerous goods shipments involve road (ADR) and sea (IMDG) transport. We ensure compliance across both modes including multimodal dangerous goods forms and consistent classification and packaging throughout the transport chain.
Do you liaise with shipping lines?
Yes. We communicate with shipping lines and port authorities regarding dangerous goods declarations, booking requirements, stowage requests and any compliance queries. We resolve issues before they cause delays.
What if a container is detained at port?
We provide immediate support for detained containers — identifying the non-compliance, advising on corrective action, liaising with MCA inspectors and shipping lines, and helping you avoid recurrence. As your DGSA, we can act on your behalf.
How much does IMDG compliance cost?
Based on the volume and complexity of your sea freight operations. Retainer packages available for regular shippers. Contact us for a free operational review and quote.
