Why DSEAR Needs Ongoing Review

A workplace risk assessment is a systematic examination of your work activities, premises and processes to identify what could cause harm to people — and whether you're doing enough to prevent it. Under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 (MHSWR), every employer must carry out a suitable and sufficient assessment of the risks to the health and safety of their employees and anyone else who may be affected by their work activities.

If you have five or more employees, the significant findings of your risk assessment must be recorded in writing. But regardless of your size, risk assessment is the foundation of every health and safety management system — without it, you're managing safety blind.

RADCaT's qualified health and safety consultants carry out thorough, practical workplace risk assessments for businesses of every size and sector across the UK. We don't produce generic templates — we visit your premises, walk your processes, talk to your team and produce site-specific, task-specific assessments that genuinely reflect your operations and give you a clear, prioritised action plan for improvement.

Whether you need a general workplace risk assessment for your office, a task-specific assessment for high-risk activities in a factory, a site-wide review for a multi-building campus, or a pre-project risk assessment for a construction site — RADCaT delivers expert, HSE-compliant assessments tailored to your industry and your operations.

An out-of-date DSEAR assessment is worse than no assessment at all. It gives false confidence that risks are controlled when they may have changed. Regular reviews from RADCaT keep your compliance current.

Common Questions

Compliance Reviews FAQ

How often should DSEAR be reviewed?

Whenever significant changes occur — new substances, process modifications, equipment changes, building alterations, incidents or new regulatory guidance. Best practice is also an annual proactive review even if no specific changes have occurred.

What triggers a DSEAR review?

Introduction of new flammable substances, quantity changes, process modifications, equipment installation or replacement, ventilation changes, building alterations, fire or explosion incidents, near-misses and new HSE guidance or regulatory amendments.

What is management of change?

A systematic process for assessing proposed modifications before implementation to determine whether they affect DSEAR compliance. Prevents well-intentioned changes from inadvertently creating new explosive atmosphere risks.

Do you track regulatory changes?

Yes. We monitor DSEAR, ATEX, COMAH and related regulatory developments and proactively notify retained clients of changes affecting their operations.

Can you verify our control measures are still working?

Yes. We carry out periodic verification of control measure effectiveness — ventilation measurements, gas detection calibration checks, earthing resistance testing and visual inspection of equipment condition.

Is this included in a retainer?

Yes. DSEAR compliance reviews are included in RADCaT's retained DSEAR packages. Contact us to discuss a retainer that matches your review needs.

How much do compliance reviews cost?

Included in annual retainer packages or available as standalone annual review visits. Contact us for pricing based on your facility size and complexity.
