Why Every Business Needs a Handbook

A workplace risk assessment is a systematic examination of your work activities, premises and processes to identify what could cause harm to people — and whether you're doing enough to prevent it. Under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 (MHSWR), every employer must carry out a suitable and sufficient assessment of the risks to the health and safety of their employees and anyone else who may be affected by their work activities.

If you have five or more employees, the significant findings of your risk assessment must be recorded in writing. But regardless of your size, risk assessment is the foundation of every health and safety management system — without it, you're managing safety blind.

RADCaT's qualified health and safety consultants carry out thorough, practical workplace risk assessments for businesses of every size and sector across the UK. We don't produce generic templates — we visit your premises, walk your processes, talk to your team and produce site-specific, task-specific assessments that genuinely reflect your operations and give you a clear, prioritised action plan for improvement.

Whether you need a general workplace risk assessment for your office, a task-specific assessment for high-risk activities in a factory, a site-wide review for a multi-building campus, or a pre-project risk assessment for a construction site — RADCaT delivers expert, HSE-compliant assessments tailored to your industry and your operations.

Tribunals expect written procedures. If you dismiss someone without following a documented disciplinary process, the dismissal is almost certainly procedurally unfair — regardless of the reason. A RADCaT handbook protects your right to manage.

Common Questions

Company Handbooks FAQ

What policies should my handbook include?

Essential policies: disciplinary procedure, grievance procedure, absence management, equality and diversity, anti-harassment, data protection/GDPR, health and safety, whistleblowing, social media/IT use. Recommended additions: maternity/paternity, flexible working, dress code, expenses, alcohol and drugs, company vehicles, training and development.

Is a company handbook legally required?

Not as a single document. However, the ACAS Code of Practice expects written disciplinary and grievance procedures. The ERA 1996 requires certain information in the written statement. The Equality Act expects written policies on discrimination. In practice, a handbook is the most efficient way to meet all these requirements.

How long should a handbook be?

Long enough to cover all necessary policies, short enough that people read it. For a small business, 30-50 pages is typical. For larger organisations, 60-100 pages. RADCaT writes concise, practical handbooks that cover everything needed without unnecessary padding.

How often should it be reviewed?

Annually at minimum. Also whenever there are legislative changes (employment law changes frequently), significant case law (tribunal decisions that change best practice), new company policies or operational changes.

Can we make the handbook contractual?

Generally, handbooks should be non-contractual — giving you flexibility to update policies without individual contract variations. Specific provisions (like enhanced redundancy pay) can be contractual if desired. RADCaT advises on the correct approach for each policy.

Do staff need to sign to acknowledge it?

Best practice is yes — a signed acknowledgement confirms the employee received the handbook and understood they should read it. This is important evidence if a policy is later breached. RADCaT provides acknowledgement forms.

How much does a handbook cost?

Based on business size, number of policies needed and complexity. New handbooks, policy additions and annual review packages all available. Contact us for a quote.
