Why Fire Awareness Training Is Essential

A workplace risk assessment is a systematic examination of your work activities, premises and processes to identify what could cause harm to people — and whether you're doing enough to prevent it. Under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 (MHSWR), every employer must carry out a suitable and sufficient assessment of the risks to the health and safety of their employees and anyone else who may be affected by their work activities.

If you have five or more employees, the significant findings of your risk assessment must be recorded in writing. But regardless of your size, risk assessment is the foundation of every health and safety management system — without it, you're managing safety blind.

RADCaT's qualified health and safety consultants carry out thorough, practical workplace risk assessments for businesses of every size and sector across the UK. We don't produce generic templates — we visit your premises, walk your processes, talk to your team and produce site-specific, task-specific assessments that genuinely reflect your operations and give you a clear, prioritised action plan for improvement.

Whether you need a general workplace risk assessment for your office, a task-specific assessment for high-risk activities in a factory, a site-wide review for a multi-building campus, or a pre-project risk assessment for a construction site — RADCaT delivers expert, HSE-compliant assessments tailored to your industry and your operations.

Fire authorities check staff training records during inspections. Inadequate fire training is one of the most common enforcement findings. Regular fire awareness training from RADCaT demonstrates compliance and protects your people.

From general awareness to specialist fire marshall training.

Fire Awareness

Foundation course for all staff — fire triangle, workplace fire risks, prevention, detection systems, alarm response, evacuation procedures and assembly points.

Enhanced training for designated fire marshalls/wardens — sweep procedures, evacuation management, roll call, fire authority liaison, PEEPs and post-evacuation duties.

Extinguisher Training

Practical training on fire extinguisher types (water, foam, CO2, powder, wet chemical), selection, operation and safe use. Live demonstration where possible.

Evacuation Procedures

Development and practice of evacuation procedures specific to your building — simultaneous, phased and progressive horizontal evacuation. PEEPs for disabled persons.

Annual Refresher

Short refresher course reinforcing fire awareness, updating on any changes to premises, systems or procedures, and maintaining staff confidence in emergency response.

Our Process

How We Carry Out a Risk Assessment

1

Premises Assessment

We review your fire risk assessment, escape routes, detection system and specific fire risks to tailor the training content.

2

Course Tailoring

Content built around your specific premises — your alarm system, your escape routes, your extinguisher locations and your industry-specific fire risks.

3

Delivery

Interactive session with presentation, discussion, practical demonstration and Q&A. On-site or centre-based. Typically 1-2 hours.

4

Practical Element

Where safe and appropriate, practical extinguisher demonstration using training extinguishers. Builds confidence in equipment your staff may never have used.

5

Certification

All delegates certificated. Records for your fire safety file and fire authority inspection evidence.

Common Questions

Fire Awareness Training FAQ

Is fire training legally required?

Yes. The RRO 2005 requires the responsible person to ensure adequate fire safety training. This includes training on recruitment, when risks change and periodic refresher training. Fire authority inspectors check training records.

How often should fire training be refreshed?

The RRO doesn't specify a frequency, but best practice is annual refresher for all staff. New starters should receive fire awareness during induction. Fire marshalls should receive enhanced training annually.

What is the difference between fire awareness and fire marshall?

Fire awareness is for all staff — understanding risks, raising the alarm, evacuation. Fire marshall training is enhanced training for designated fire wardens covering sweep procedures, evacuation management, assisting disabled persons and fire authority liaison.

Do you include practical extinguisher training?

Where safe and appropriate, yes. We demonstrate extinguisher types and correct operation using training extinguishers. This builds confidence — many staff have never used an extinguisher and would hesitate in a real emergency.

Can you train our care home staff?

Yes. Care home fire training covers progressive horizontal evacuation (moving residents to the next fire compartment rather than full building evacuation), PEEPs for residents with mobility or cognitive impairment, night-time procedures with reduced staffing and oxygen cylinder management.

Do you provide certificates?

Yes. Every delegate receives a fire training certificate. Records for your fire safety file and evidence for fire authority inspectors.

How much does fire training cost?

Per session pricing. Includes tailored content, materials, practical demonstration and certification. Contact us for a quote.
