Why H&S Training Is a Legal Requirement

A workplace risk assessment is a systematic examination of your work activities, premises and processes to identify what could cause harm to people — and whether you're doing enough to prevent it. Under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 (MHSWR), every employer must carry out a suitable and sufficient assessment of the risks to the health and safety of their employees and anyone else who may be affected by their work activities.

If you have five or more employees, the significant findings of your risk assessment must be recorded in writing. But regardless of your size, risk assessment is the foundation of every health and safety management system — without it, you're managing safety blind.

RADCaT's qualified health and safety consultants carry out thorough, practical workplace risk assessments for businesses of every size and sector across the UK. We don't produce generic templates — we visit your premises, walk your processes, talk to your team and produce site-specific, task-specific assessments that genuinely reflect your operations and give you a clear, prioritised action plan for improvement.

Whether you need a general workplace risk assessment for your office, a task-specific assessment for high-risk activities in a factory, a site-wide review for a multi-building campus, or a pre-project risk assessment for a construction site — RADCaT delivers expert, HSE-compliant assessments tailored to your industry and your operations.

HSE can prosecute employers for failing to provide adequate training. More importantly, trained staff have fewer accidents, less sickness absence and greater confidence in managing workplace risks.

Common Questions

Health & Safety Training FAQ

Is H&S training a legal requirement?

Yes. HSWA 1974 Section 2 and MHSWR 1999 Regulation 13 require employers to provide adequate health and safety training. This includes induction training for new starters, training when risks change and refresher training to maintain awareness.

What topics should H&S training cover?

Depends on your industry and hazards. All workplaces: legal duties, hazard awareness, risk assessment, incident reporting, fire safety and first aid. Industry-specific additions: manual handling, COSHH, working at height, confined spaces, machinery safety, noise, vibration and PPE use.

How often should training be refreshed?

When risks change, new equipment or processes are introduced, after incidents, and at regular intervals. Best practice is annual refresher for all staff. New starters should receive H&S induction before starting work.

Do you deliver on-site?

Yes. We deliver all H&S training at your premises anywhere in the UK. On-site delivery means your team learns in their actual work environment with real examples from their daily operations. We also offer centre-based courses at our Wigan facility.

Can training be tailored to my industry?

Absolutely. We tailor every course to your specific industry, workplace hazards and operational environment. Factory training is completely different from office training — and both are different from construction or care home training.

Do you provide certificates?

Yes. Every delegate receives a training certificate documenting course content, date and assessor. Essential evidence for HSE inspections, client audits and insurance requirements.

How much does H&S training cost?

Priced per session, not per delegate. Includes tailored content, all materials and certification. Contact us for a quote based on your team size and training requirements.
